The short answer: SEO gets your page ranked so a buyer clicks it. AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your business named when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, or Gemini for a recommendation. They run on the same foundation. The differences are in how the result shows up, how you measure it, and which sources the assistant trusts. Build the SEO foundation first, then measure and work the AI answers on top of it.
Buyers ask me this on almost every sales call now. The search data says they are not alone. “seo vs aeo” is searched about 1,000 times a month in the US, up 171% in a year. “aeo vs seo” pulls another 1,900. In the last 30 days it was the fastest-rising search related to “ai seo” on Google Trends.
Most answers I read online fall into one of two camps. One says AEO is a whole new discipline and your SEO agency is obsolete. The other says AEO is a buzzword and nothing has changed. Both are wrong, and the client data I have shows why.
AEO vs SEO, side by side
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| The goal | Rank a page so a person clicks it | Get your business named inside the answer |
| Where it shows up | Google’s blue links and Map pack | ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews |
| How many winners | Ten links, three map spots | A handful of names |
| The unit of success | Position, clicks, click-through rate | Presence rate and rank inside the answer |
| Measured with | Search Console, rank tracking, GA4 | Repeated prompt sampling plus AI referral sessions in GA4 |
| What moves it | Pages, links, technical health, titles | The same pages, plus third-party sources the assistant trusts |
Read the last row twice. The first half of it is identical. That is the part most “AEO is new” pitches skip.
What stays the same: the pages that win Google win the answer
A national property tax appeal firm I work with runs more than 3,000 pages. Most of them are county pages and competitor comparison pages. In July we rewrote the titles and meta descriptions on those two page types.
Here is what happened in Google, June to July:
- Clicks went from 5,168 to 7,836, up 52%.
- Click-through rate went from 0.92% to 1.20%.
- Average position improved from 8.2 to 7.8.
Growing sites usually dilute. More pages, more impressions, lower average CTR. This one concentrated. CTR and position improved while traffic grew.
In the same month, ChatGPT cited the firm as one of two sources when asked for the best property tax appeal service. Its analytics recorded 146 sessions arriving from AI assistants, and the site tracked 341 key events.
We did not run a separate AEO program to get the citation. The comparison pages that earned the clicks are the pages the assistant quoted. That is the foundation. Most of the work that gets you named by an assistant is SEO work you should already be doing.
What changes: four things SEO never had to deal with
1. The shortlist is tiny
A Google results page gives you ten chances. An AI answer names a handful of businesses and stops. If you are sixth, you are invisible. There is no page two to scroll to.
2. You measure presence, not position
You cannot check an AI answer once and call it a ranking. Ask ChatGPT the same question several times and the answer changes. So we sample the same buyer question many times across each assistant and record two numbers: how often you appear (presence rate) and where you sit in the answer when you do (average rank).
Here is what that looks like for a medical courier operating in 30 metros across 8 states:
| Buyer question | ChatGPT | Google AI Mode | Gemini |
|---|---|---|---|
| “medical courier” | 75.5% · rank 2.35 | 93.9% · rank 1.39 | 75.5% · rank 1.62 |
| “stat medical courier” | 87.8% · rank 1.05 | 83.7% · rank 2.05 | 70.8% · rank 1.76 |
Look at the spread. The same business, on the same question, lands between 70.8% and 93.9% depending on the assistant. Tracking one assistant and assuming the others match is how owners get surprised. I break these four numbers down further in what an AI visibility audit actually measures.
3. Other people’s websites carry more weight
In the property tax example, the other source ChatGPT cited was a competitor backed by a MarketWatch article. The assistant trusts what other publications say about you, sometimes more than what you say about yourself.
For SEO, a mention without a link was worth little. For AEO, a mention in a source the assistant reads can be the whole ballgame. Directory profiles, review sites, trade publications, and press all feed the answer.
4. Clicks can fall while the business grows
This is the one that scares owners, so I will be blunt about it. When the assistant answers the question, fewer people click through. Your traffic chart can drift down while your pipeline goes up.
The medical courier is the example I use. Only 22% of its search clicks are new discovery, roughly 389 a month. The rest are people who already know the brand. One of those discovery clicks landed on its Jacksonville city page and became an account now approaching $3,000 a week in receivables. That is about $150,000 a year from one visit.
If you judge that account by a traffic chart, you miss it. Judge AEO and SEO by booked revenue and qualified leads. Traffic is a supporting number.
Where GEO fits
You will also see GEO, generative engine optimization. Agencies use AEO and GEO almost interchangeably. When there is a difference, GEO is the umbrella term for the whole AI search program and AEO is the part focused on being the answer to a direct question. For a business owner, the budget decision is the same. I cover the GEO side and its own comparison table on our generative engine optimization page.
Where I would spend first
If you are running a $500K to $2M business and deciding where the next dollar goes, this is the order I use with clients:
- Fix the foundation. Indexing, site speed, one clear page per service and per city you serve. If Google cannot find and trust a page, no assistant will quote it.
- Write pages that answer the buyer’s actual question. Comparison pages, pricing pages, city pages, and “how do I choose” pages. These earned the property tax firm its clicks and its citation.
- Rewrite titles and descriptions on pages that already get impressions. It is the cheapest win in SEO, and it is exactly what moved that firm’s CTR from 0.92% to 1.20%.
- Measure the AI answers. Pick five buyer questions and track presence rate and rank across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Gemini every month. Add AI referral sessions from your own analytics.
- Build the third-party layer. Reviews, directory profiles, and trade press, so the assistant has sources other than you to confirm you.
Steps 1 to 3 are SEO. Steps 4 and 5 are where AEO adds real work. Skipping to step 5 without the first three is the most common way I see owners waste money on “AI SEO.”
Why I care about this as an owner
I built my elearning company’s search presence by hand: 360 keywords ranked in the top three across 156 product pages. When I sold it to private equity in an eight-figure exit, that search asset was a material part of what the buyer paid for.
A buyer today will ask a second question: when someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation in your category, does your name come up? That is AEO. It sits on top of the same asset I built for Google, and it is becoming part of how a business gets valued. The full framework sits on our AI SEO agency page, and my longer take on whether any of this makes SEO obsolete is in will AI replace SEO.
FAQ
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. The pages that rank in Google are usually the pages AI assistants quote. AEO adds measurement and a third-party source layer on top of an SEO foundation. Without the foundation, AEO has nothing to work with.
What is the main difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO is measured by position and clicks on a results page. AEO is measured by how often your business is named inside an AI answer and where it appears in that answer, sampled across several assistants.
Do I need a separate AEO agency?
You need someone who can do both and measure both. If an agency cannot show you a presence rate on a named buyer question, before and after, it is not doing AEO. Here is how we run answer engine optimization for clients.
How do I know if my business shows up in AI answers?
Ask the questions your buyers ask, several times, across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Gemini, and record whether you appear. Or let us run it for you with the free scan below.
