Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) Explained
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so AI engines can parse it, trust it, and quote it directly in their answers. It is the content half of generative engine optimization, focused on how a page reads to a machine.
When ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews answer a buyer’s question, they pull from sources they can read cleanly and cite confidently. AEO makes your pages those sources.
AEO, GEO, and SEO: how they fit
- SEO gets your page ranked so a person can find and click it.
- GEO is the full program that gets your business cited by AI, including technical and authority work.
- AEO is the content discipline inside GEO: writing and formatting so a model can extract a clean answer.
How to structure content for AI answers
- Answer first. Open each section with a direct, one-sentence answer, then support it. Models lift that first sentence.
- Use real structure. Clear headings, short paragraphs, ordered lists, and data tables. Structure is how a model knows what belongs together.
- Be specific. Real numbers, dates, names, and dollar figures. Specific content gets quoted. Vague content gets skipped.
- Add a focused FAQ. Buyer questions in their own words, with tight answers. FAQs are some of the most-cited content in AI search.
- Mark it up. FAQ and Article schema tell the engine exactly what each block is.
A quick before and after
Weak for AEO: “Our team brings a wealth of experience to help unlock your brand’s full potential in the modern search landscape.” A model gets nothing to quote.
Strong for AEO: “An AI SEO engagement for a mid-sized business runs $2,000 to $5,000 per month and typically covers an audit, schema setup, and AI-optimized content.” A model can lift that whole sentence into an answer.
