Answer engine optimization tools measure whether AI assistants cite your business, and which competitors they cite instead. That is the whole category. Everything else a vendor tells you is packaging around that one job.
Searches for these tools are up 61% against their own twelve-month baseline. The category is real and growing. Most of the buying advice about it is not.
What these tools actually do
An AEO tool runs a set of prompts against ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Gemini, then records whether you were mentioned, where in the answer, and who was mentioned alongside you. Run that weekly and you get a citation rate over time.
That number is the point. Everything useful follows from it, and no amount of dashboard styling substitutes for it.
The four things worth paying for
- Multi-engine coverage. The five engines behave differently and cite different sources for the same question. A tool that tracks one is telling you about one fifth of the problem.
- Prompt-level detail, not just a score. “Visibility: 62” is useless. You need to know which questions you win, which you lose, and who beat you on the ones you lost.
- Competitor capture. The most actionable output is the list of domains cited instead of you. That is your real competitive set in AI search, and it is usually not the companies you think you compete with.
- History. A single reading is noise. AI answers vary run to run for the same prompt. Only a trend line over weeks tells you anything.
What is not worth paying for
A one-off audit PDF. Citation rates move. A snapshot from six weeks ago describes a web that no longer exists.
A “GEO score” with no methodology. If a vendor will not tell you how many prompts they ran, against which engines, in which locations, the number is decoration. Ask. The answer is diagnostic on its own.
Content generation bundled into the tracker. These are different jobs. Measurement tools should measure. Generic AI-written pages are the thing AI engines are learning to skip over, so a tool that measures your citations and then writes the content least likely to earn them is working against itself.
How to test a tool before you buy
Take one prompt your best customer would actually type. Not your brand name, and not a keyword. A real question, like “who is the most reliable medical courier in Tampa for same-day lab specimens.”
Run it yourself in all five engines. Write down who gets cited. Then ask the vendor to show you the same prompt in their product. If their answer does not resemble what you just saw with your own eyes, their sampling is wrong and every number downstream of it is wrong too.
The measurement that matters most
Most teams track the wrong thing. They watch whether they appear at all. The number that predicts revenue is position within the answer.
Being named third in a list of five is a very different outcome from being the source the model leads with. On our own client work we track presence rate and average rank inside the answer as separate figures, because they move independently and only one of them tracks with inbound calls.
One client sits above 90% presence on their core service term in Google AI Mode at an average rank near the top of the answer. Presence alone would have told us far less than the pair.
Do you need a tool at all
If you have five priority prompts, no. Run them manually once a week in five engines and log it in a spreadsheet. Twenty minutes, and you will understand your position better than a dashboard would teach you.
Buy a tool when you cross roughly thirty prompts, or when you need location-specific answers, or when you are reporting to someone who needs a chart rather than your word for it. Below that threshold the spreadsheet wins because you read every answer instead of skimming a number.
If you just want to know where you currently stand, our free AI visibility scan runs this across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini and shows you the gap between the terms you own and the terms you should.
